Land of the rising sun, forged in civil war.

Japan

Japan is a major region in the grand strategy game *Europa Universalis IV*, representing the fractured archipelago during the Sengoku period and its subsequent unification under the Tokugawa shogunate. The region is characterized by a unique government mechanic, the 'Shogunate' and 'Daimyo' system, where powerful clans vie for control of the Emperor and the title of Shogun.

Lore & Background

The Ashikaga Shogunate holds nominal authority, but real power lies with the independent daimyo, each ruling their own province. The Emperor in Kyoto is a spiritual figurehead, while the Shogun struggles to maintain control. This period of chaos, known as the Sengoku Jidai, defines Japan's early gameplay as daimyo compete to unify the islands.

In Their Own Story

The drums of war beat from Kyushu to Hokkaido. In the shadow of Mount Fuji, a young daimyo receives word that his rival has seized a neighboring castle. He knows the Shogun in Kyoto will not intervene. Tonight, he must decide: swear fealty to a stronger lord, or strike first and risk everything. The ink on his war plans is still wet.

Reader's Guide

Japan offers a unique and challenging start. As a daimyo, your goal is to conquer your rivals and become Shogun, then centralize power to form a unified nation. The key is managing the 'Daimyo' vassal system—loyalty is fickle, and rebellion is common. Once unified, Japan can choose to embrace isolationism to preserve its culture or open up to Western trade and technology, triggering the 'Christian Incident' and potential civil war. A unified Japan is a formidable naval and colonial power, capable of dominating the Pacific and even challenging Ming China for control of East Asia. The 'Sakoku' decision locks you out of most foreign interactions but grants stability, while embracing the West offers rapid technological advancement at the cost of internal strife.
