Lore & Background
Belgium, a young kingdom of fewer than a decade, strains under the weight of its independence, while the German Confederation and the patchwork of Italian states remain fragile mosaics of sovereignty. France, governed by the constitutional monarchy of Louis-Philippe, tries to project a liberal image without provoking the conservative monarchies of Vienna and St. Petersburg. The Ottoman Empire, though still vast, bleeds territory and prestige, and the great powers circle like vultures over the Balkans and the straits. In the wider world, the United States is in the grip of Jacksonian populism and westward expansion, the Latin American republics are still consolidating their independence from Spain, and the British Empire stretches across every ocean. The Industrial Revolution is reshaping economies and militaries, and the question of how old empires adapt to a new age of nationalism and commerce defines every diplomatic table.
In Their Own Story
The candle gutters in the war room at Brussels. The young Belgian king's advisor spreads the latest dispatch across the oak table—Prussian cavalry on the frontier, another note from the French ambassador, a petition from the Rhinelanders demanding seats in the Diet. Outside, the November wind presses against the leaded glass, and the city of Brussels, still smelling of fresh paint and revolution, hums with a nervous energy. The advisor folds the dispatch, straightens his cravat, and says simply, "Sire, we are twenty-six years from the world that will remember us. The question is whether we survive to see it." The king does not answer. He is already reaching for the Prussian dispatch.
Reader's Guide
Belgium is an independent kingdom, France is a constitutional monarchy, and the German and Italian states remain fragmented under the watchful eyes of Austria and Prussia. The Ottoman Empire still commands the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean, while Britain and Russia press their respective interests across the globe. Key nations to consider include France, Britain, Prussia, Austria, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, the Kingdom of Belgium, the various Italian states (Piedmont-Sardinia, the Papal States, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies), and the United States. The player's path depends heavily on which nation they choose. The narrative arc centers on managing the liberal-conservative tension that defines the era. Players may push for Italian or German unification, contest Ottoman territory in the Balkans, expand colonial holdings, or simply consolidate domestic stability. Major branching paths include whether to support or suppress nationalist movements, how to position against the Concert of Europe, and whether to prioritize industrial and economic development over military buildup.
