Trade Companies
Whoever heads the company, owns the region's wealth.
Trade Companies are a core economic mechanic in the Europa Universalis grand strategy series, most prominently featured in Europa Universalis IV. They represent the great historical trading hubs of the world—places like Malacca, Malabar, Mexico, and Peru—where all trade flowing through an entire region converges before passing onward to the next node in the chain. Rather than being a single province, a Trade Company is the apex of a regional trade network, and the nation that holds the most trade power at that node is said to 'head' it, earning a meaningful bonus to its trade income from the entire company.

Lore & Background
In the broader narrative of the series, Trade Companies embody the transition from medieval local markets to a truly global economy. They are the point where the player's trade network meets the rest of the world, and the first place a new power feels the full weight of competing with established colonial empires for the spoils of commerce.
In Their Own Story
The monsoon winds shift, and with them the entire balance of the Malabar Company. A Venetian admiral watches from the deck of a carrack as a Portuguese merchant, three nodes upstream, quietly adds a second merchant to Calicut. By the next monthly tick, the heading has passed. In Lisbon, a clerk crosses out Venice's name and writes Portugal in its place, then updates the ledger: another region's silver now flows to the Crown. No cannon was fired. No treaty was broken. And yet an empire has just lost a fortune it did not know it was holding.
Reader's Guide
A Trade Company is the final trade node in a region's trade chain. All goods flowing through that region's provinces and intermediate nodes ultimately converge at the Trade Company node, and from there the aggregated trade value passes to the next node in the global chain. The nation with the highest trade power at the Trade Company node is its 'head' and receives a flat percentage bonus applied to the trade income generated by that company. To head a Trade Company, you need the most trade power at its specific node. Trade power is built by placing merchants in provinces within the region, by owning provinces with high base trade power, and by certain ideas or technology bonuses. Because the node's total trade power is the sum of all nations' contributions, you are competing against every other power with merchants in that region, not just the current head. Strategic considerations: (1) Trade goods matter—placing a trade good in a province upstream can redirect flow toward your node. (2) The heading bonus is a percentage of the company's total trade value, so a large, active company is worth far more to head than a small one. (3) Losing the heading is not a one-time penalty; you lose the bonus every single month until you reclaim it. (4) Trade Companies interact with the broader trade node system, the merchant system, and the trade good assignment mechanic, so changes in any of those can shift your standing at the company node. In practice, securing and holding a Trade Company is a long-term economic project. It rewards consistent merchant investment, careful trade-good placement, and awareness of rival nations' trade strategies in the same region.
Did You Know?
- A Trade Company's heading can change from one monthly tick to the next if a rival adds or removes a single merchant in the region, making it one of the most volatile economic positions in the game.
- Trade Companies in Europa Universalis IV are named after real historical trading hubs—Malacca, Malabar, Mexico, Peru—reflecting the actual ports that dominated global commerce in the 16th and 17th centuries.
- Because the heading bonus is a percentage of the company's total trade value, a Trade Company in a region with many active trade goods is worth substantially more to head than one in a sparsely traded region, even if the
- Trade Companies were a carry-over concept from Europa Universalis III, where they functioned as controllable regional entities, before being refined into the node-based heading system of EU4.
